F.A.Q’s

I am not the sporty type, is Pilates for me?

Certainly, Pilates is for everyone regardless of your level of fitness or any physical problems that you may have. Pilates is not competitive so you are working for yourself to achieve your own goals. The exercises can be adapted to be very gentle and therapeutic as well as being a challenging workout for people in any physical state. We work to encourage our clients to get more in touch with their bodies and to develop greater awareness of flexibility and strength.

What should I expect from my introduction class?

At your first class you will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire to help us to determine what your individual needs are. A teacher will discuss with you how we will work to achieve your aims and any particular issues that you wish to address. This will be followed by a brief physical assessment.
If this is your first experience of Pilates we will introduce you to the equipment and closely monitor how you move. As you progress we will continue to monitor your progress and adapt to any changes in your circumstances that arise. All introductory classes are taught on a one to one basis.

How many people will be in a “small group” class?

At Artichoke Pilates we keep our classes to a maximum of three people at any one time. This does not mean that all classes will be full, at quieter times there may be fewer. Each client is given an individually tailored class based on their personal circumstances.

What should I wear for a Pilates class?

Comfortable loose fitting clothing that enables you to move freely. No shoes are worn in the studio so comfortable socks are a good idea.

Should I eat before Pilates?

To eat lightly is fine but arriving just after a large meal is not really a good idea. Keeping yourself well hydrated is always very important.

How long before I notice results?

This very much depends on your personal situation. Some will feel profound results from the first experience of Pilates and others will take time to feel the effects. Joe Pilates is often quoted saying “after 10 sessions you will feel better, after 20 sessions you will look better and after 30 sessions you will have a new body!”
